Content Analysis of Case Formulation in Play Therapy

Abstract

|
This study analyzed the component factors and promotional strategies of case formulation that play therapists have experienced, A study was conducted making use of a survey of 34 play therapists with more than 5 years of counseling experience and are qualified by the Korean Association for Play Therapy. The survey used open-ended questions and the results obtained were sent to two play therapy specialists and four play therapists who have play therapist certification exceeding that of a doctoral program for review, and the results were then classified and labeled. The component factors of case formulation are classified into two categories: (1) ``case analysis`` and (2) ``counseling goal setting``. Case analysis is composed of (1) ``child variables`` and (2) ``family variables``. Child variables have six factors: (1) ``chief problems experienced by children``, (2) ``clinical assessment``, (3) a ``child``s relational characteristics``, (4) the ``counseling needs of a child``, (5) ``children``s psychological characteristics``, and (6) ``child``s social characteristics``. Family variables have three factors: (1) ``exploration of parents`` characteristics``, (2) ``counseling needs of parents``, and (3) ``exploration of a family`s influence on a child`s behavior``. And counseling goal setting is composed of (1) ``child`` and (2) ``parents``. The promotional strategies of case formulation are classified into seven categories: (1) ``hypothesis testing``, (2) ``professional training``, (3) ``communication with experts``, (4) ``exploration of child information``, (5) ``the application of professional counsel knowledge``, (6) ``case management capability``, and (7) ``counselor`s understanding of themselves``.
